Mark Phelan: Little 2.0-liter engines pack plenty of power to transform auto ...

There's a new class of super-engine on the road, and it's not what you expect.

The most exciting, technically intriguing engines I've tested in the last six months weren't throbbing V8s, exotic V12s, trendy electric-gasoline hybrids or post-modernist hip European diesels.

My heart -- and my eager right foot -- belongs to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Engines that size were long dismissed as weaklings fit only for little economy cars. Americans weren't inclined to take an engine seriously if the total displacement of its cylinders was the same size as a 99-cent bottle of Coke.

Back in June rumors appeared on the internet about a Cadillac flagship sedan which will be based on the rearwheel drive Zeta platform. Now, ToraltonCars is hearing that GM is also considering a Premium Zeta-based BUICK flagship for North America and that GM management has the car’s target set on the Lexus LS. Sources have stated that the GM board of directors recently approved preliminary design work for the Buick flagship sedan. The approval has granted management and product development limited resources to continue working on the program, however the car is not yet approved for production (much like the Cadillac sedan). Very little is known about the car at this time as it is in its infancy stage, but sources tell that word within the halls of GM’s design studio is that the design is “very hot”. Buick already has a flagship sedan on the Zeta platform: in China. This current Park Avenue was just recently given a mild facelift and is expected to see a total replacement (on Zeta) in a couple of years. The proposed sedan would vary from the Chinese Park Avenue. The remaining question is if this new sedan would ultimately replace the Chinese Park Avenue as well. Apparently the logic internally is that the Buick flagship would be designed to compete directly with the Lexus LS, while the Cadillac flagship would be designed to directly target the BMW 7-series. A Cadillac flagship is being worked on as more funding for the project has now been freed up. Products built off of Holden’s variants of the Zeta platform are not easily manufactured in North America. Sources tell that the variant of Zeta these two sedans would utilize is called "Premium Zeta" and that it would be engineered for North American production. It is likely that these two sedans will not see full approval until after GM’s initial public stock offering.

What is the best engine to swap into a 84 Buick Regal Sedan?

Preferably something I can scrap out of a junkyard. I have a 3.8 V6 2bbl in it with a spun cam bearing. I need a new engine and would like a little more horsepower. Any advice?

HAHA a vette engine... seriously? If you dont have a few thousand laying around for a LS4 vette engine just Find a carbureted 305 chevy. Quite Reliable, and just enough power to get the job done without breaking the bank. It will drop right in your regal
